Over four million individuals have already tried the Suica system, introduced by the East Japan Railway Company on November 18,2001,and these customers have responded favorably. During the 14 years that this system was in development, researchers focused on high-speed processing as the critical development theme, especially at automatic fare collection gates. That is because customers must have it pass through the automatic fare collection gates smoothly. In this report, I will focus not only on the technical development but also on field tests performed to evaluate the system under conditions similar to actual operations, development of the IC card and its rewriting capabilities for faster processing, and the use of the Touch & Go format, in which the IC and spends more time in the physical range of communication with reader.

Sloshing motion inside of tank of water rocket has a significant influence on the flight characteristics of the rocket Sloshing characteristics of water rocket was studied on the ground test and its influence on the flight was observed by the flight test. It was identified that rocket with conventional nozzle has large sloshing motion inside of the tank and its flight was unstable. On the other hand, rocket with newly developed nozzle has small sloshing motion and its flight was quite stable.

Some field surveys have been done on chariots of ancient China. In this paper, axle bearings are discussed. Before Christ, wooden axle is supported by wooden bearings. Beginning of the first millennium, mass production method of cast iron by water jet turbine. crank mechanism, and reciprocating blower are invented. After Christ, cast iron axle bearings are applied to chariots.

Space debris impact to solar array causes not only destruction of insulation layer but also impact-induced plasma. This plasma lead to arcing between two points with potential differences on the solar array, for example, high potential cell and low potential cell or substrate with a damage on the insulation layer. Joule heat of this arcing can carbonize insulation layer and create permanent short-circuit path. This is permanent sustained arc. In this study, hypervelocity impact test was conducted to a solar array coupon which was compose of grand potential substrate and high potential cell applied voltage using an external circuit to simulate condition of power generation. We measured temperature and density of plasma created by hypervelocity impact as well as current and voltage of the external circuit in order to evaluate possibility of the permanent sustained arc between high potential cell and substrate on the solar array due to a space debris impact.

A tailless aircraft is known as an airplane with the merit of little air drag since the tail and the fuselage, which connects the main wing with the tail plane, do not exist. It also has the demerit of instability in maneuvering in the longitudinal direction. Our team at Ritsumeikan University has been daring to participate in the birdman-rally with the tailless aircraft, but a good result has not yet been obtained. The purpose of this paper is to study and to develop the tailless aircraft for the birdman-rally by computational fluid dynamics. The data of the flight at the last rally were analyzed, and the problems and solutions were obtained.

A flow-induced vibration test facility that simulates a hot leg piping of the Japanese sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) with 1/3 scale is used to investigate the flow pattern and pressure fluctuations of the pipe. As the observation of flow pattern, the velocity distributions measured by LDV show the flow pattern is independent of Reynolds number at high Reynolds number. The maximum velocity is about 15 times the mean velocity in the elbow. A statistical analysis of the pressure fluctuations in a separation region shows the power spectrum is of white noise up to 20Hz, the autocorrelation sharply drops to zero less than 1 sec of time interval and the probability density distribution figures almost the Gaussian distribution, excepting its flatness-3 is 3.

We examined the drag and thrust efficiency of two airship models with a stern propeller. There is a interaction between the airship hull and the propeller. To obtain an understanding of the interaction, we measured the form drag of the airships with and without a propeller, and calculated the propeller efficiency and the total efficiency of airships. We also compared the results for two airships. Furthermore we carried out inviscid computation for the effect of the propeller on airship efficiency. It was clarified that there are two patterns for the direct effect of the propeller on the pressure on the hull surface. One is good for the airship hull and the other is undesirable.

In this study, effects of viscosity and aging on plastic behavior of A7475 aluminum alloy under biaxial loading and in stress relaxation at several temperatures, are investigated experimentally, and are analyzed theoretically based on the Two-Factors constitutive concept, which means the overstress concept including aging effect. As much as temperature become higher, viscosity stress increases, on the other hand, aging stress decreases. Both viscosity and aging in axial loading are larger than those in torsional loading. The model based on Two-Factors constitutive concept gives systematic predictions on both plastic flow behavior and relaxation behavior for each loading direction.

A research program for investigating the thermo-elasto-plastic behavior when a laser beam is irradiated to the surface of a thin metal plate with cooling its backside is described in this paper. The residual deformation and the residual internal force occur in a thin plate after the cooling process. Therefore the plastic analyses for the second and third irradiation are more complicated. Based on the radial flow rule, the deformation increments can be decomposed into an elastic component and plasticity component on the interaction curve. In this paper, the plastic analysis for the third irradiation, which is obtained after the first and the second irradiation were performed, is treated. Especially, the distributions of the residual internal forces obtained after cooling process for the third irradiation are revealed.

EMG signals from human muscles are very useful for data acquisition and triggering to control the several actuators like a power assist. EMG signals have the possibilities for substantial action pattern and we examined experimental test for dynamical motion of arm and leg of human. Recently, much attention has been paying to the application of EMG Signal by Loop type Algorithms. We tried to associate the stimulus of muscles EMG signals from the two or three positions of the legs and arms. In this paper, we discussed on the availability of on-line EMG Signal by Loop type Algorithms for simplified EMG model signals. We are able to show the pattern of the visual contour by EMG Signal by Loop type Algorithms.

A part of the SORE system was developed for Reactor Vessel. SORE is prototype system that calculates stress history and creep-fatigue damage for main component of MONJU using plant data In this study, the calculating method of stress and temperature using plant data and the procedure of fatigue damage and creep damage evaluation using calculated history of temperature and stress was investigated.

Dry-out and rewetting on fuel rods in a reactor core, possibly observed during the events of pump trip or reactor power increase etc., are significant phenomena from the viewpoints of securing the integrity of a fuel rod and safety evaluation on MCPR in the design. The two-phase flow boiling visualization experiments of dry-out and rewetting processes by a high-speed digital movie were successfully carried out under BWR rated-operating condition of ∿7MPa and ∿286℃ in the present work; on the other hand, these visualization tests could be found only under the atmospheric pressure conditions so far. The tests were carried out using the thermal-hydraulic experimental loop of Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO), which enables us to directly observe the two-phase flow boiling, dry-out and rewetting phenomena under the BWR rated-operating conditions of ∿7MPa and ∿286℃. The observations by a high-speed digital movie, measurements of void fraction increase by optical-fiber void probes and rods' surface temperature soaring and steep diving by thermocouples brought us incontrovertible evidences of the occurrence of rewetting just after dry-out in transients.

It is hard to use the drill by bare-handed. We want to develop machine that the vibration or impact was suppressed. A woodpecker is enumerated as for repeatedly an impact. A woodpecker strikes its beak toward a tree repeatedly. But, the damage of the brain or the living body doesn't occur by this action. Therefore, it is predicted that the brain and body of woodpecker is protected from the shock by some methods. And it turns out that the woodpecker has the original mechanism that endures impact. In this study, from the structure of woodpecker (especially hyoid bone) makes a model. And the model is analyzed. It thinks about the endures impact from the result.

Heat transfer processes during a dry sauna (room temperature 70℃, relative humidity 10%) and mist sauna (room temperature 40℃, relative humidity 100%) were examined using a human thermal system. The results suggest the following: (1) During the dry sauna, the primary heat input to the body is convective and radiant heat gain, and the primary heat output from the body is evaporative loss. (2) During the mist sauna, the primary heat input to the body is condensate heat transfer, and there is no heat output from the body, which enables core temperature to increase like that during the dry sauna. (3) Skin moisture increase after mist bathing may be attained by heating and moisturing skin through condensation.

The pinning effect of a high-temperature superconductor(HTS) realize noncontact levitation without additional devices. An HTS magnet can be easily produced by field cooling. When an HTS experiencing magnetic field is cooled by liquid nitrogen, the flux-pinning effect keeps magnetic flux trapped inside its body. It is field cooling. We developed an HTS rotary actuator system. This paper describes the design of the actuator system and a rotation speed controller. The controller is the same of the brushless DC servo motor. The experimental results showed that the rotation speed is satisfactorily controlled by the PI control law.

We have collaborated a student rocket project with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) since 1995 and two student sounding rockets were launched in 2000 and in 2002. The student rocket is designed and made by students during from the planning to analysis. The third launch will be at Alaska in March 2005. The apogee altitude of rocket is designed to 100 km. Tokai student team has made a UV. sensor, a digital sun sensor and a 3-axial fluxgate magnetometer on this rocket. We have a plan to measure ultraviolet ray in the polar region. By UV measuring, we may estimate the ozone density and total ozone quantity as a scientific mission. We also can measure a rocket attitude performance by a magnetometer and a sun sensor as the second task.

To increase the speed of Shinkansen trains, it becomes more important to reduce the noise generated from Shinkansen cars. We developed the high-speed test trains "FASTECH360" that have new equipment such as low-noise pantographs, pantograph noise insulation plates and sound-absorbing panels for the noise from the lower area of car bodies. We conducted running tests using "FASTECH360" from June of 2005 to June of 2009. As a result, the noise level of "FASTECH360S"(runs only on Shinkansen line) at the speed of 360km/h is reduced by more than 4 dB compared to that of series E2-1000, present commercial trains, at the speed of 360 km/h (at a distance of 25 m from the track). We also performed the noise analysis of "FASTECH360S" at 360 km/h. Consequently, we estimated that pantograph noise contribution to the overall noise level was reduced by about 7dB compared to that of E2-1000 at 360 km/h and contribution of noise from the lower part of cars to the overall noise level was reduced by about 1dB as well.

The teaching tool utilized on learng the compression ignition engine in the class of junior high school industrial arts and homemaking course was produced, and the learning effect was examined by lesson practises. This teaching tool is the one utilizes the adiabatic compression. And it was improved upon the former one for the students to use more easily. By this teaching tool, the students can learn the principle of ignition through the experiments. Using this teaching tool, the students could do the experimental learning more well than before and the students who show the interest in learnig the expansive contents increased.
